Authorities in Los Angeles are searching for two men who escaped from a reentry program by tampering with their ankle monitors. This incident raises concerns about the effectiveness of the monitoring systems in place for individuals nearing the end of their prison sentences.
Jose Arroyo, 39, was reported missing early Friday morning after officials received an alert about his ankle monitor. Later that same day, a similar alert was triggered for Deshon R. Daniels, 26. Both men were part of a voluntary program designed to help inmates reintegrate into society as they serve the final stages of their sentences.
The reentry program allows individuals with two years or less left on their sentences to live in a community setting while receiving support for employment and housing. However, it remains unclear if Arroyo and Daniels were housed at the same facility, as there are three Male Community Reentry Program centers in Los Angeles County.
Both men were serving sentences for second-degree robbery. Their escape highlights potential gaps in the security and supervision of reentry programs, which are meant to provide a smoother transition for inmates back into society. Authorities are urging the public to assist in locating the men as they continue their investigation into this incident.
