A woman in Australia is on trial for allegedly murdering three members of her ex-husband’s family by serving them poisonous mushrooms. Erin Patterson, 50, took the stand in court as the trial approaches its end. She is accused of killing her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66. Additionally, she faces charges for attempting to murder Ian Wilkinson, 68, after the four dined at her home in Victoria state in July 2023.
The meal, which included beef Wellington, mashed potatoes, and green beans, was tainted with death cap mushrooms. This deadly mushroom, known scientifically as Amanita phalloides, caused severe poisoning, sending all four guests to the hospital the following day. Ian Wilkinson survived after receiving a liver transplant, but the others did not.
Patterson has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Her lawyer argued that the poisoning was accidental, suggesting that she did not intend to harm anyone. If convicted of murder, she could face life in prison. The attempted murder charge carries a potential sentence of up to 25 years.
