At Least 44 Confirmed Dead and 160 Injured in Dominican Republic Nightclub Roof Collapse

At least 58 people have died and over 160 others are injured after a roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, early Tuesday morning. The tragic incident occurred around midnight while a concert was taking place.

Juan Manuel Méndez, the director of the Center of Emergency Operations, reported that rescue teams are still working through the rubble to find any potential survivors. He expressed hope that many people may still be alive, emphasizing that the rescue efforts would continue until every person is accounted for.

The collapse happened nearly 12 hours ago, and rescue crews have been tirelessly searching for survivors among the debris. Among those injured is merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the incident. Pérez’s manager described the chaos, noting that the roof fell shortly after the concert began. He thought it was an earthquake and quickly sought shelter.

Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Montecristi province and sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, was also caught in the collapse. She had called President Luis Abinader shortly after the roof fell, informing him that she was trapped. Unfortunately, she later died in the hospital.

President Abinader has been actively involved in the response, stating that rescue crews are working tirelessly to assist the victims. He expressed deep regret over the tragedy and is overseeing the emergency operations.

The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation. Global Affairs Canada has confirmed that no Canadian citizens were involved in the incident but is closely monitoring the situation. They have extended their condolences to the families affected and are prepared to assist any Canadians in need.
