Tragedy struck on the road between Uyuni and Colchani in Bolivia’s Potosí department as two buses collided following a "lane invasion," as reported by local media. The incident occurred as one of the buses was en route to the city of Oruro in the west, where the renowned Oruro Carnival, one of Latin America’s largest festivals, was in full swing.
The aftermath of the collision saw the vehicles being cleared from the scene by 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), with the injured promptly transported to hospitals in both Oruro and Potosí for urgent medical attention. Unfortunately, the identities of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident have not yet been disclosed, and the conditions of the injured passengers remain to be determined.
Cdr Flores, as reported by local media, mentioned that the police were awaiting the results of alcohol tests conducted on the drivers involved in the collision. This incident adds to a grim statistic in Bolivia, where deadly traffic accidents are regrettably common. Just last February, over 30 individuals perished when a bus careened nearly 800 meters into a ravine between Potosí and Oruro. In another tragic event in January, 19 lives were lost when a bus veered off the road in the same vicinity near Potosí.
Government data reveals a somber reality, with an average of 1,400 individuals succumbing to road accidents annually in a country with approximately 12 million inhabitants. As investigations into this latest incident unfold, the broader issue of road safety in Bolivia looms large, prompting a critical examination of measures to prevent such heartbreaking losses in the future.
