At Least 18 Killed and Dozens Wounded in Russian Missile Attack on Ukraine

A recent missile strike in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, has left a devastating toll. Local officials report that 18 people have died, including nine children. The attack, which occurred on Friday, also injured 61 others, with victims ranging from a 3-month-old baby to elderly residents. Currently, 40 individuals remain hospitalized, including two children in critical condition.

The regional governor, Serhii Lysak, confirmed the tragic numbers and emphasized the impact on the community. Oleksandr Vilkul, the head of the city’s defense council, expressed outrage, stating, “There can never be forgiveness for this,” and honored the victims with a call for eternal memory.

Kryvyi Rih is notably the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He shared details of the strike on social media, noting that it hit a playground and nearby streets, indicating a blatant disregard for civilian life. The missile damaged around 20 apartment buildings, over 30 vehicles, an educational institution, and a restaurant.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the strike targeted a restaurant where military commanders and Western instructors were meeting. They asserted that their high-precision missile strike resulted in the deaths of 85 military personnel and foreign officers, but these claims have not been independently verified and were dismissed by Ukrainian officials.

In a separate incident, a drone strike in Kryvyi Rih resulted in one woman’s death and injured seven others. President Zelenskyy attributed the ongoing attacks to Russia’s refusal to seek peace, stating, “Every missile, every drone strike proves Russia wants only war.” He urged Ukraine’s allies to increase pressure on Russia and enhance Ukraine’s air defenses.

In the broader context, Russian forces launched 92 drones into Ukraine overnight, with Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepting 51. The situation remains tense, as one person died in the Russian-occupied town of Horlivka due to shelling. Russian officials reported the destruction of 28 Ukrainian drones in the Donetsk region, marking a significant escalation in hostilities.

As the conflict continues, the humanitarian impact is profound, with families mourning lost loved ones and communities grappling with fear and uncertainty.
