A vigil in Santa Ana, California, took a chaotic turn when a group of animal activists mistakenly targeted the wrong house while seeking justice for cats allegedly killed by a local man. The event, held to honor the slain felines, escalated into violence as the crowd believed they had found the home of the suspect, 45-year-old Alejandro Oliveros Acosta.
The situation unfolded on a Sunday evening, just a week after Acosta was arrested for allegedly murdering numerous cats in the neighborhood. Reports suggest that he used a needle to inject substances into the animals, with residents claiming to have found their pets in distressing conditions, including one cat found hanging from a tree.
During the vigil, a large group gathered outside a house they mistakenly thought belonged to Acosta’s brother. They demanded that he come out and began vandalizing the property, breaking windows and even using pepper spray against the homeowner, who was not related to Acosta. The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed fear for his family’s safety, stating that children were present in the house during the incident.
It took more than an hour for the Santa Ana police to respond to the scene. The police later declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, emphasizing that while they support peaceful protests, they would not tolerate violence or vandalism. They issued a statement reminding the public that engaging in criminal behavior would have consequences.
Acosta, who has been accused of luring and killing cats in the area, was arrested after police received multiple reports of disturbing incidents involving the animals. He was booked on felony animal cruelty charges but was released on bail shortly after his arrest, a move that sparked outrage among local residents.
Neighbors are now concerned that their own missing pets may have fallen victim to Acosta, and many plan to report their cases to the police. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the vigil and the ongoing investigation, the Santa Ana police continue to urge residents to remain calm and report any information related to the case.
