Alleged Senior Iranian Regime Official Departing Canada Amid Deportation Threat

A senior member of the Iranian regime has left Canada just days before she was set to begin deportation proceedings. Elham Zandi departed the country on February 25, shortly after the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) indicated it would hold a hearing regarding her expulsion. The hearing was scheduled for March 7.

Zandi’s exit marks the third time a suspected high-ranking Iranian official has left Canada amid a crackdown on regime members that began in 2022. The Canadian government imposed sanctions in response to Iran’s harsh treatment of protesters advocating for women’s rights and freedom. While only one official has been deported so far, two, including Zandi, have chosen to leave voluntarily.

Documents obtained by Global News reveal that the CBSA had previously withdrawn its case against Zandi without providing an explanation. Following her departure, the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) closed her file.

Zandi initially came to Canada as a tourist but later applied for a work permit. When her application was denied, she filed a lawsuit against the Canadian government for $10,000. Her case drew attention from officials, including Liberal MP Patrick Weiler, who made inquiries about her work permit status. However, Weiler’s office stated they were unaware of the allegations against her, which originated from the CBSA.

The Iranian government has been accused of using its influence in Canada to silence critics and dissidents. Activists have urged the Canadian government to enhance its screening processes to prevent regime members from seeking refuge in the country. While some officials have faced deportation or left voluntarily, others remain in Canada despite facing expulsion orders.

The situation continues to evolve as the Canadian government addresses the presence of Iranian officials in the country, particularly in light of recent events involving Iran’s support for groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.
