Ukrainian soldiers are sharing harrowing accounts of their retreat from the Kursk region, describing the experience as surreal and terrifying. As they faced relentless attacks, many soldiers reported scenes reminiscent of a horror film. The situation deteriorated rapidly, with heavy enemy fire and a barrage of Russian drones making their withdrawal increasingly difficult.
In recent messages, soldiers recounted a "catastrophic" retreat, especially after losing control of Sudzha, the largest town they held. Many shared their stories anonymously for safety. They painted a grim picture of panic and chaos as troops and equipment were destroyed on the roads, with some soldiers trapped under constant drone surveillance.
One soldier, known as Volodymyr, detailed how the main route for movement between Sudzha and Ukraine’s Sumy region had turned into a deadly zone. He noted that just weeks prior, this road was relatively safe, but by March 9, it was under constant attack, with multiple drones flying overhead at all times. He expressed frustration that Ukrainian command seemed unprepared for the sudden shift in control.
Another soldier, Maksym, reported that the Russian forces had amassed a significant number of troops, including around 12,000 North Koreans, to retake Kursk. He mentioned that the enemy had deployed advanced drones, which made it nearly impossible to maintain supply routes, leading to a buildup of wrecked vehicles that further complicated their retreat.
The situation worsened as Anton, a soldier stationed at the Kursk front, described the impact of Russian drones on their operations. He said supply lines had been severed, making it impossible to deliver essential supplies. He managed to escape Sudzha on foot, narrowly avoiding danger from drones that were constantly monitoring their movements.
Dmytro, another soldier, likened the chaos of retreat to a horror movie, noting the roads littered with destroyed vehicles and casualties. He shared a close call when his vehicle became stuck, and they were targeted by a drone. After hiding in a forest for hours, they were eventually rescued.
In contrast, Artem, who was recovering from injuries in a military hospital, reported a more hopeful perspective. He highlighted the resilience of Ukrainian forces in other areas, claiming they were still holding their ground and creating a buffer zone that prevented Russian forces from advancing further into Ukraine.
As the situation unfolds, Ukraine’s General Oleksandr Syrskyi insists that their forces have regrouped to more defensible positions. He claims that the Russians have suffered heavy losses, but the overall landscape has changed dramatically since last summer. Military analysts suggest that Ukraine has lost much of the territory it initially gained in the region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated that the Kursk operation achieved its goal of diverting Russian troops from the eastern front, yet the true cost of this retreat remains uncertain. The stories from the front lines reveal the human toll of this ongoing conflict and the challenges that lie ahead for Ukrainian forces.
