Agents in plain clothes and unmarked vehicles are apprehending immigrants in L.A. Who are they?

Recent immigration arrests in Los Angeles have sparked confusion among residents about who is responsible for these actions. Federal agents have been seen making arrests in unmarked vehicles, wearing casual clothing and masks, leaving many to wonder if they are from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or another agency.

All these agents are part of the Department of Homeland Security, which was established after the September 11 attacks to address terrorism and other threats to the country. Their roles include responding to disasters, enforcing trade laws, and managing immigration at U.S. borders. The three main branches involved in these operations are ICE, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Recently, CBP agents were spotted near Dodger Stadium, leading to protests where demonstrators held signs reading “ICE out of L.A.” However, the CBP clarified that their presence was unrelated to any enforcement actions and was merely a brief visit to the parking lot.

When conducting operations, immigration officials typically identify themselves verbally as ICE or Homeland Security agents. They are also supposed to wear vests that display their agency’s name. According to Tricia McLaughlin, an assistant secretary of Homeland Security, officers wear masks for their safety against potential threats from dangerous criminal gangs.

In early June, ICE conducted a raid at a fashion warehouse in downtown Los Angeles, resulting in the arrest of over 40 immigrant workers. This operation spurred protests across the city, highlighting the community’s concerns about immigration enforcement.

HSI has also been active in the area. Just two months prior to the ICE raid, HSI agents arrested individuals suspected of being in the country unlawfully during a nightclub raid and an operation involving a small boat from Mexico.

CBP agents have also made their presence felt in Los Angeles, recently arresting individuals in Hollywood and other areas. Their mission focuses on managing border security and preventing illegal crossings.

Adding to the federal presence, California has seen the deployment of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines. While the National Guard has been tasked with protecting federal buildings, the Marines have been limited to supporting federal personnel without arrest powers.

The ongoing situation has raised significant concerns among residents, particularly regarding the potential for racial profiling and the impact of these operations on local communities. As federal authorities continue their enforcement actions, many Angelenos are left wondering about the implications for their neighborhoods and families.
