DOGE Team Storms U.S. Institute of Peace, Displacing Officials

A major clash unfolded on Monday afternoon in Washington, D.C., as the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk’s team, attempted to take control of the U.S. Institute of Peace. This independent agency, which focuses on promoting peace, found itself at the center of a heated confrontation involving law enforcement.

The situation escalated when Musk’s team, backed by police, entered the institute’s headquarters. This move came after President Trump ordered the dismantling of the agency. However, officials at the institute argued that, as a congressionally chartered nonprofit, they were not under the direct authority of the executive branch, meaning Musk and Trump could not legally shut down their operations.

Sophia Lin, a lawyer for the institute, described the tense moment as police escorted her and other officials out of the building. "DOGE just came into the building — they’re inside the building — they’re bringing the F.B.I. and brought a bunch of D.C. police," she stated during the incident.

George Moose, the institute’s former acting president who was recently fired and is contesting his dismissal, accused Musk’s team of an illegal takeover. He emphasized that the institute’s legal status protects it from such actions by the executive branch.

This confrontation highlighted the ongoing tensions regarding Musk’s efforts to reduce the federal workforce and dismantle various agencies. It also raised questions about the limits of presidential power and the independence of organizations that have traditionally operated outside direct government control. The standoff is likely to be a significant point of contention as the administration continues its controversial policies.
