Jesse Colin Young, the beloved frontman of the iconic folk rock band the Youngbloods, has passed away at the age of 83. He died on Sunday at his home in Aiken, South Carolina, due to a heart attack, as confirmed by his publicist, Michael Jensen.
Young was well-known for his powerful vocals and his role in the 1960s counterculture movement. He gained fame with the Youngbloods, whose hit song "Get Together" became an anthem for peace and unity during a turbulent time in American history. The song’s uplifting message resonated with many and has been featured in various films and commercials over the years.
Born in New York, Young started his music career in the vibrant Boston club scene. His first solo album, "The Soul of a City Boy," marked the beginning of his journey in the music industry. It was at Club 47, a key venue in the folk music revival, where he first made a name for himself. There, he met guitarist Jerry Corbitt, and together they formed the Youngbloods.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 1967, but it wasn’t until 1969 that they struck gold with "Get Together." The song reached No. 5 on the charts after being featured in a public service announcement. Young was inspired to record it after hearing another artist perform it at an open mic night, a moment that changed the course of his career.
Throughout his life, Young remained active in music. He was working on new projects, including an autobiography and a children’s book, and had recently completed a song for Future Youth Records. His publicist described him as an incredibly active and kind-hearted person, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
After the Youngbloods disbanded in 1972, Young pursued a successful solo career, releasing more than 15 albums. Although he faced health challenges, including battling Lyme disease, he returned to performing and released his last album, "Dreamers," in 2019.
Young is survived by his wife, Connie Darden-Young, and their four children. His legacy as a musician and a voice for peace will continue to inspire generations to come.
