Mookie Betts will not play in the upcoming Tokyo Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Chicago Cubs due to an illness. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts made the announcement on Sunday night, explaining that Betts has been struggling with flu-like symptoms and has lost about 15 pounds.
Roberts noted that Betts is starting to feel better but needs to rehydrate and regain strength. The eight-time All-Star might even fly back to the United States ahead of the team to rest and prepare for the Dodgers’ domestic opener on March 27.
The Dodgers and Cubs are set to kick off the Major League Baseball season on Tuesday at the Tokyo Dome, with a second game scheduled for Wednesday. In Betts’ absence, Miguel Rojas will take over at shortstop for these two games.
Betts began feeling unwell in Arizona, just before the team departed for Japan. Although he traveled with the team, he hasn’t recovered as quickly as expected. He participated in a light workout on Sunday but became fatigued quickly.
This season marks a significant change for Betts, who is transitioning to play shortstop after spending most of his career in right field and second base. Last season, he had a solid performance, batting .289 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs, contributing to the Dodgers’ World Series win.
Roberts expressed concern about the potential for soft tissue injuries when a player is dehydrated, emphasizing the importance of Betts taking the necessary time to recover.
