Several thousand supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro gathered at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. They came to show their support for Bolsonaro, who is facing accusations related to an alleged attempt to overthrow his successor, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro, who is 69 years old, had called for a massive demonstration, hoping to rally a million people to the beach. This event is part of his strategy as he looks ahead to the upcoming elections next year, where he aims to run for president again.
The rally had a clear message: attendees were demanding amnesty for those convicted in connection with the January 8, 2023 riots in Brasilia. During those riots, Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed key government buildings, including the presidential palace, Congress, and the Supreme Court.
Bolsonaro addressed his supporters, stating that elections without him would undermine democracy in Brazil. He emphasized his desire to leave a better country for future generations, expressing concern about the current political climate. Many attendees, like 64-year-old former military officer Jose de Souza Vitorino, echoed these sentiments, describing the current times as “dark.”
The former president is trying to mirror the political comeback of U.S. President Donald Trump. A banner at the rally featured Trump, symbolizing the connection Bolsonaro seeks to establish with the American leader. Bolsonaro has claimed he is a victim of political persecution, similar to Trump’s narrative, and is fighting against a ban that prevents him from running for office until 2030 due to allegations of spreading false claims about Brazil’s voting system.
On March 25, Brazil’s Supreme Court will consider whether there is enough evidence to put Bolsonaro on trial for his alleged role in the January riots. If convicted, he could face more than 40 years in prison. Political analysts suggest that this rally is also a way for Bolsonaro to assert his presence and intentions to be a candidate in the 2026 elections, despite his current political challenges.
As Bolsonaro continues to rally his base, concerns linger within Lula’s camp regarding the president’s health and declining popularity amid rising inflation. The political landscape in Brazil remains tense, with both leaders vying for influence in a divided nation.
