An Indiana police officer and his wife are facing serious charges after a shocking incident involving their six-year-old daughter. Cody Scott, a Logansport Police officer, and his wife, Kylie Scott, are both charged with two counts of felony child neglect. The charges stem from an event that took place on January 19, when a concerned witness spotted the girl standing outside in freezing temperatures, holding a sign that threatened harm to her brother.
On that cold day, when temperatures dipped to just 18 degrees, the witness called 911 after seeing the child in distress. The sign she was forced to hold read, "I want to stab and kill my brother — I even take an antipsychotic." This alarming situation prompted police to respond, including Officer Scott himself, who later admitted to being responsible for the girl’s punishment.
During the investigation, Officer Scott defended his actions by claiming his daughter was allowed to come inside every 10 minutes to warm up. He explained that this punishment was a response to her pouting over being denied lip gloss. However, witnesses and investigators raised serious concerns about the appropriateness of such a punishment, especially in such harsh weather.
The situation escalated when another concerned individual approached Officer Scott, questioning why the girl was made to endure such treatment. Despite the mounting evidence against him, Scott insisted that he was only trying to discipline his daughter, who he claimed had serious behavioral issues and had been in therapy for three years.
The couple’s actions have drawn widespread criticism, especially as it was revealed that this was not the first time the girl had been forced to hold a sign as punishment. A caseworker noted that the girl had previously been made to carry signs to school and even to Walmart, which read derogatory messages about her behavior.
Following the incident, the Logansport Board of Public Works decided to place Officer Scott on leave without pay while the investigation continues. The police chief stated that they acted quickly, transferring the case to the Indiana State Police hours after the report came in.
As this troubling case unfolds, it raises serious questions about the treatment of children and the responsibilities of parents, especially those in positions of authority like Officer Scott. The community is left to grapple with the implications of this incident and the well-being of the young girl at its center.
