Rapper Jay Rock Detained in L.A. on Allegations of Illegal Gun Possession

Grammy Award-winning rapper Jay Rock was arrested on Thursday evening in Los Angeles. This incident took place near the Watts public housing complex, where he grew up. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that he was taken into custody around 5:20 p.m. on East 115th Street.

Jay Rock, whose real name is Johnny Reed McKinzie, faces serious charges. He was booked on suspicion of illegal firearm possession, a violation of California Penal Code Section 29800(a)(1). This law prohibits individuals with certain felony convictions from owning firearms. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.

Initial reports indicate that McKinzie was arrested after police responded to a call about trespassing and drinking in public at the Nickerson Gardens housing complex. When officers arrived, he reportedly fled from his vehicle, prompting a search that led to the discovery of a firearm inside.

In a video shared on social media, Jay Rock can be heard questioning the police about what he was drinking, indicating a tense exchange during the arrest.

Jay Rock gained fame for his contributions to hip-hop, particularly for his collaboration on the song "King’s Dead," which won a Grammy in 2019. He has been recognized for his efforts to give back to his community, receiving the key to Watts in a ceremony in May 2019.

Details about his next court appearance have not yet been released. Fans and observers will be watching closely as this situation unfolds.
