Brieonna Cassell, a 41-year-old mother from Sheldon, Illinois, faced a harrowing ordeal after a car accident left her trapped in her vehicle for nearly a week. The incident occurred on March 5, when she fell asleep at the wheel while driving to her mother’s house and crashed into a ditch in rural northwest Indiana.
For six long days, Cassell was pinned inside her Ford Taurus, her injuries severe. The crash broke her left arm and legs, and the dashboard crushed her lower body, making escape impossible. Her cellphone, which could have been her lifeline, ended up under the passenger seat, out of reach and quickly drained of battery.
During her time in the car, Cassell fought to stay alive. She managed to scream for help as soon as the accident happened, but her cries went unheard. The car was situated almost directly under a bridge, making it difficult for passing drivers to see or hear her. Despite the dire circumstances, she showed remarkable resourcefulness. In a critical moment, she fashioned a tourniquet from her belt to control the heavy bleeding from her leg.
As the nights grew colder, she used a comforter from her car to keep warm. Her mother, Kimberly Brown, shared that Cassell was determined to survive, hoping that someone would eventually find her.
