Philippe Lazzarini, the commissioner-general of UNRWA, has expressed urgent concerns about the worsening situation in Gaza. He warned that conditions are deteriorating rapidly, especially after Israel stopped all supplies from entering the region over a week ago. Lazzarini described this halt as a “weaponisation of humanitarian aid,” highlighting the severe impact on the local population.
During a press briefing in Geneva, Lazzarini emphasized the necessity of resuming humanitarian aid to Gaza. He pointed out that without this support, the progress made during the initial ceasefire could be lost, and the risk of returning to widespread hunger remains high. He has been vocal about the critical role of UNRWA, which has been providing essential services like education and healthcare to Palestinians since 1949.
The agency has faced significant challenges recently, including a disinformation campaign against it, new legislation in Israel banning its operations, and cuts in funding from major donors. Lazzarini warned that if UNRWA were to collapse, it could create a dangerous void in the region, leading to further instability in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. He stressed that denying children education and basic services could fuel extremism and violence.
The financial situation for UNRWA is dire. Once the largest funder, the United States has significantly reduced its contributions, opting instead to channel aid through other organizations. This decision came after accusations from Israel regarding UNRWA’s operations. The Biden administration’s cuts followed a broader trend initiated by the previous administration, which also affected various aid programs.
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing regarding the reconstruction of Gaza. A $53 billion plan led by Egypt has garnered support from several countries, including Saudi Arabia. This plan aims to rebuild Gaza in a way that contrasts sharply with former President Trump’s approach, which involved displacing Palestinians from the area.
Negotiations between Israel and Hamas are currently stalled, with Hamas accusing Israel of failing to fulfill its commitments under the ceasefire agreement. They claim that Israel has not withdrawn its troops from the border area and continues to block outside aid from reaching Gaza.
