Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has made significant changes to the leadership of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She appointed Todd Lyons as the acting director and Madison Sheahan as the deputy director. These appointments come as Noem aims to restore a focus on accountability and results within the agency, which she believes has been lacking under the Biden administration.
Noem announced these changes on a Sunday, emphasizing the need for ICE to operate effectively. She stated that for the past four years, ICE agents have been hindered in their ability to perform their duties. According to Noem, the new leadership will help fulfill the public’s expectation for ICE to target, arrest, and deport illegal immigrants.
Todd Lyons has a solid background in ICE, currently serving as the acting executive associate director of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). He has held various positions within the agency since becoming an ICE agent in 2007. His experience includes overseeing all domestic operations and managing field offices in several states.
Madison Sheahan has previously worked closely with Noem, serving as the secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. In that role, she managed a large budget and led over 800 employees. Sheahan has also been involved in law enforcement initiatives in Louisiana, particularly during major events like Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl.
Both Lyons and Sheahan did not comment immediately on their new roles. Noem, who was the governor of South Dakota before her current position, has been vocal about her commitment to securing the U.S. border and addressing illegal immigration. Under her leadership, the Department of Homeland Security has already taken steps such as deploying military resources and resuming border wall construction.
As Noem leads the department, she faces the challenge of reversing policies from the previous administration while addressing the ongoing issues of immigration and border security. The new appointments signal a shift back to a more aggressive approach to immigration enforcement, aligning with the priorities of the Trump administration.
