Global Womens March Calls for an End to Violence and Inequality

Demonstrators around the world took to the streets on International Women’s Day, calling for an end to gender-based violence and inequality. Protests unfolded in cities across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas, highlighting the urgent need for change.

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, crowds gathered to voice their concerns about President Javier Milei’s austerity plans. Many believe these plans threaten vital services for women. The government’s decision to close the Ministry of Women, Genders, and Diversity has raised alarms. Critics argue that this move, along with plans to remove the term "femicide" from the penal code, undermines efforts to protect women. A report indicated that a woman is killed every 30 hours in Argentina, with many victims murdered by intimate partners or relatives.

In Ecuador, hundreds marched in Quito, demanding justice for women who have lost their lives to violence. Demonstrators chanted, “Justice for our daughters!” as they protested against the patriarchal system. Meanwhile, in Bolivia, thousands took to the streets, calling for respect for women’s rights and condemning the lack of accountability in femicide cases.

European cities also saw significant protests. In Poland, activists opened a center near the parliament to provide medical abortions, challenging the country’s strict abortion laws. This act was a direct response to the limitations on women’s reproductive rights in a predominantly Catholic nation.

In Spain, protesters held signs in honor of Gisele Pelicot, a survivor of sexual violence. Her story has become a rallying point for many fighting against sexual abuse across Europe. Demonstrations in Madrid echoed similar sentiments, as women united to demand gender equality and an end to violence.

In Nigeria, thousands gathered in Lagos, celebrating their womanhood with music and dance, dressed in purple, the color of the women’s liberation movement. In contrast, Russia’s celebrations were more formal, with soldiers presenting flowers to women in St. Petersburg.

In Ukraine, a poignant ceremony took place in Kharkiv to remember female soldiers who lost their lives during the ongoing conflict with Russia.

These events reflect a global commitment to advocating for women’s rights and addressing the pervasive issues of violence and inequality. As women continue to raise their voices, the call for change grows louder.
