Authorities have revealed the causes of death for actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa Hackman. The couple was found deceased in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26. Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
At a press conference, Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell shared that Gene Hackman, 95, died from hypertensive atherosclerosis cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor. Betsy, 65, died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a serious illness typically transmitted from rodents to humans.
Dr. Jarrell indicated that Betsy likely died on or around February 11, while Gene was probably alone in their home for about a week before his death, which was recorded by his pacemaker on February 18.
Sheriff Mendoza stated that many questions about the case have been answered, but the investigation will continue. Authorities are waiting for cell phone records and the results of a necropsy on the couple’s dog, Zinna, who was also found dead in the house.
During the investigation, it was noted that Betsy had picked up Zinna from a veterinary hospital on February 9. Zinna was discovered deceased in a crate near where Betsy’s body was found. The couple had two other dogs, Bear and Nikita, who survived.
Mendoza mentioned that detectives had taken two cell phones from the home. There is currently no evidence that Gene communicated with anyone during the week he was alone after Betsy’s passing. Mendoza expressed doubt that the cell phone records would reveal anything new about the timeline of events.
Betsy was last known to be active on February 11, when she communicated with her massage therapist and was seen shopping at a local market and pharmacy. After that date, there were no outgoing communications from her.
Dr. Jarrell explained that hantavirus can cause flu-like symptoms and can progress to severe respiratory issues. She noted that the timeline of Betsy’s illness is still unclear, as it can take several days for symptoms to worsen significantly.
The investigation began after the couple’s deaths were deemed suspicious, prompting a thorough search of their home. Mendoza emphasized that the case remains open until all loose ends are tied up, including the pending necropsy results and cell phone data.
This tragic event has drawn attention not only for the circumstances of their deaths but also for the legacy of Gene Hackman, a celebrated actor known for his extensive career in film.
