A tragic incident unfolded in Beverly Grove when a man fatally shot his older brother after witnessing him choke their 80-year-old mother. The Los Angeles Police Department received a call about the shooting around 1:25 p.m. on Friday in the 400 block of North Alfred Street.
According to police, the situation escalated when the 61-year-old brother began damaging windows and personal items in their mother’s home with a baseball bat. He also threatened her, prompting her to call her younger son, who is 57 years old. When he arrived, he found his brother choking their mother. In a desperate attempt to save her, he fired a warning shot with a shotgun, but the choking continued.
Feeling he had no other option, the younger son shot his brother. LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman stated that this shooting is being treated as justifiable homicide, not a criminal act. The shooter has not been arrested, and both brothers’ names have not been released.
The mother suffered head injuries that required stitches, but she survived the ordeal. LAPD Detective Samuel Marullo commented on the situation, saying, “The shooter saved his mother’s life. He had no choice but to kill his own brother.” He added that the severity of the choking could have led to the mother’s death if not interrupted.
This incident highlights the extreme measures some may take in life-threatening situations, especially when it involves family.
