California Republican lawmakers are upset after several of their members were suddenly removed from important legislative committees. This shake-up was orchestrated by Democratic Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas, and many Republicans see it as a form of retaliation for their opposition to state funding initiatives and their criticism of the Democrats’ management of issues like insurance, wildfires, and the cost of living.
Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher voiced his concerns, suggesting that the changes were a way for the Democratic leadership to punish those who challenge them. He described it as a “new doghouse move,” indicating that lawmakers who upset the leadership might find themselves sidelined. Gallagher mentioned having a conversation with Rivas but felt he did not receive a clear explanation for the changes.
Rivas has the authority to appoint and remove committee members at any time, and last week’s reshuffling impacted both parties, with over a dozen committee changes. Despite the changes, every committee still has a Republican vice chair. Rivas’ communications director, Nick Miller, stated that the speaker aims to ensure members are in roles that allow them to work effectively for Californians.
Among those removed were Assemblymembers Carl DeMaio and Alexandra M. Macedo, who lost their seats on the Assembly’s budget committee. Joe Patterson, another Republican, was removed from his position as vice chair of the health committee. DeMaio, who has been vocal on social media about budget issues, noted that he was warned to tone down his criticisms after a contentious budget hearing.
Macedo questioned the reasons behind her removal, expressing disbelief at the severity of the action compared to her efforts to engage with the issues. Patterson also expressed surprise, stating that as a minority party member, he felt it was his duty to speak out against the majority’s actions.
While some Republicans were removed from key positions, they were also reassigned to other committees. For instance, Macedo was appointed as vice chair of the elections committee after losing her spot on the budget committee.
This reshuffling highlights the ongoing tensions in California’s legislature, where Democrats hold a significant majority, limiting the power of Republican lawmakers. The changes have sparked discussions about the dynamics of political power and the challenges faced by minority party members in effectively voicing their concerns.
