Anora, a film about a sex worker who marries a Russian oligarch’s son, was the big winner at the 97th annual Academy Awards. The movie took home the top prizes for Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. Mikey Madison won Best Actress for her role in Anora, while Adrien Brody clinched the Best Actor award for The Brutalist.
Another standout at the Oscars was the musical Emilia Perez, which received the highest number of nominations with 13 nods. The film secured victories for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actress. Zoe Saldana was recognized as the Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Emilia Perez, while Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain.
In a historic moment, Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win the award for Best Costume Design for Wicked. Additionally, the documentary feature No Other Land, which sheds light on Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, was honored with the Best Documentary Feature award.
The night also saw Sean Baker winning the award for Best Original Screenplay for Anora, and Peter Straughan taking home the prize for Adapted Screenplay for Conclave. Other winners included I’m Still Here for Best International Film, El Mal from Emilia Perez for Best Original Song, and Flow for Best Animated Film.
