At least four individuals have tragically lost their lives, while several others remain missing following a devastating avalanche that struck the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The avalanche, which occurred in the village of Mana near the Tibet border on Friday, swept away road construction workers, sparking a frantic rescue operation in the mountainous region.
Rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate and save those affected by the avalanche. So far, around 50 individuals who were buried under snow and debris have been successfully rescued. However, the toll stands at four fatalities as a result of the injuries sustained during the natural disaster.
The Indian army has been actively involved in the search and rescue efforts, deploying helicopters to aid in locating the five individuals who are still unaccounted for in the snow-covered terrain of the Himalayan mountain state. The challenging conditions, compounded by heavy snowfall, have made the operation particularly arduous for the rescuers.
Uttarakhand state chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the avalanche. Speaking on the relief efforts, Dhami stated that rescue teams are working around the clock to provide support to the impacted individuals during this crisis.
Gaurav Kunwar, a former village council member of Mana, shed light on the circumstances surrounding the avalanche, describing the affected area as a transient zone with temporary inhabitants, mainly laborers working on border roads during the winter season. The presence of army personnel in the vicinity further highlights the strategic importance of the region.
The India Meteorological Department had issued warnings of heavy rainfall and snow in several northern Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir. Orange alerts for snowfall were also issued in specific districts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the severity of the weather conditions that contributed to the avalanche.
As the rescue efforts continue amidst challenging conditions, the community remains united in providing support and aid to those affected by the tragic events in Uttarakhand.
