Israel Army Investigation Uncovers "Total Breakdown" in Preventing October 7 Attack

The Israeli army has admitted to a significant failure in preventing the deadly attack carried out by Hamas on October 7. This acknowledgment comes after a detailed investigation revealed that the army had underestimated Hamas’ capabilities for years, leading to a lack of preparedness that ultimately resulted in the tragic loss of civilian lives.

The investigation report highlighted that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians during the attack. It pointed out that the longstanding perception that Hamas was not interested in a full-scale conflict and that Israel would receive ample warning in case of an attack had gone unchallenged, contributing to the lack of readiness to respond effectively.

One of the key findings of the probe was that Israel had focused its intelligence and military efforts on other fronts, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, and had relied too heavily on intelligence, barriers, and defensive measures alone. This strategic focus left Israel vulnerable and caught off guard when Hamas launched the attack.

The attack itself unfolded in three waves, with more than 5,000 fighters and civilians entering Israel at its peak. The first wave involved over 1,000 elite Nukhba fighters from Hamas who infiltrated Israel under heavy fire, disrupting the military’s communications system and command centers. Subsequent waves saw thousands more joining the incursion, creating chaos as the Israeli army struggled to regain control.

In the aftermath of the attack, which claimed the lives of an estimated 1,139 people in Israel and led to a significant number of Palestinian casualties, questions have been raised about the government and military’s handling of the situation. The resignations of key officials, including Israel’s spy chief and top general, underscore the gravity of the situation and the accountability being demanded.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has called for an official commission to investigate the attack further, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the face of this tragic event. The Israeli army’s self-investigation has been commended for its courage and integrity in facing the failures that allowed the attack to occur.
