‘Puppy Mountain’: The Rise of a Chinese Cliff as a Popular Tourist Destination

A vacation photo posted by Shanghai-based designer Guo Qingshan on Valentine’s Day has sparked a viral sensation in China, leading to the emergence of a new tourist attraction dubbed "Puppy Mountain." The image, which features a mountain resembling a dog’s head, quickly gained popularity on social media platforms, inspiring many to visit the site and share their own canine-themed pictures.

Guo captured the photo during a hike in his hometown of Yichang, located in Hubei province, at the end of January. While reviewing his pictures, he was thrilled to discover the mountain’s unique shape next to the Yangtze River, describing it as both magical and adorable. He noted that the mountain’s posture gives the impression that it is drinking from the river or watching fish, adding a whimsical touch to the natural landscape.

The post received an overwhelming response, garnering over 120,000 likes on the Chinese social media app Xiaohongshu within just ten days. The hashtag #xiaogoushan, which translates to "Puppy Mountain," attracted millions of views on Weibo, further fueling interest in the location. Many dog owners began to share photos of their pets alongside the mountain, creating a playful competition to see which dog bore the closest resemblance to the rocky formation.

As word spread, tourists flocked to Yichang to witness Puppy Mountain for themselves, often bringing their dogs along for photo opportunities. Yang Yang, a local resident, expressed her excitement after visiting the mountain with her poodle, stating that the experience matched perfectly with her love for traveling with her pet.

The mountain, located in Zigui County, can be viewed from an observation deck that overlooks the Yangtze River, the longest river in China. Following the viral moment, many visitors shared their own photos from the deck, with some reflecting on how they hadn’t noticed the mountain’s canine shape in their previous visits.

Shi Tong, another Yichang local, shared his experience of recognizing the mountain from a photo he took in 2021. He remarked that he had thought it resembled a dog back then but had not realized its potential for viral fame until Guo’s post.

The phenomenon surrounding Puppy Mountain highlights the intersection of social media and tourism, demonstrating how a single image can breathe new life into a location, attracting visitors eager to experience its charm firsthand. As more people share their experiences, Puppy Mountain is poised to become a must-visit destination for both dog lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
