Vivek Ramaswamy has officially declared his candidacy for the governorship of Ohio, aiming to replace the term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine in the 2026 election. The announcement was made during a rally in Ramaswamy’s hometown of Cincinnati, where he expressed his vision for the state, stating, "I will lead Ohio to become the state of excellence in America." His campaign has garnered significant attention, particularly due to endorsements from prominent figures such as former President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Ramaswamy, who previously competed against Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary, received Trump’s endorsement via a post on the social media platform Truth Social. Trump praised Ramaswamy as "something special," highlighting his youth, intelligence, and dedication to the country. "He will be a GREAT Governor of Ohio, will never let you down, and has my COMPLETE AND TOTAL ENDORSEMENT!" Trump wrote, emphasizing his confidence in Ramaswamy’s leadership abilities.
Musk also extended his support shortly after Trump’s announcement, expressing his backing in a post on X (formerly Twitter). "Good luck, you have my full endorsement!" Musk stated, further solidifying Ramaswamy’s standing among influential Republican figures.
Ramaswamy’s campaign comes at a time when he has shifted focus from the presidential race to local governance, having stepped down from his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a newly formed initiative led by Musk. Speculation about a potential rift between Ramaswamy and Musk has been denied by Ramaswamy, who is now concentrating on his gubernatorial aspirations.
During his rally, Ramaswamy reflected on Ohio’s historical significance and his desire to restore its reputation as a model state. He noted that while young people today may mock the state, there was a time when Ohio was seen as a leader and a source of inspiration. "Today, young people on the internet make fun of something by saying ‘that’s so Ohio.’ But less than a century ago, people weren’t making fun of Ohio, they were aspiring to be Ohio," he remarked.
At 39 years old, Ramaswamy brings a fresh perspective to the race, having previously endorsed Trump and served as a surrogate for the former president. His campaign emphasizes a rejection of victimhood and a celebration of achievement, themes he has articulated in various public appearances, including a recent segment on the show "Hannity," where he urged Americans to embrace a victor mentality.
As the race for Ohio’s governorship heats up, Ramaswamy’s endorsements and his vision for the state’s future are likely to play a significant role in shaping the political landscape leading up to the election.
