Musk Promises to Revamp X Following Strong Support for Ukraines Zelenskyy in Polls

Elon Musk has announced plans to overhaul X’s fact-checking feature in light of a recent opinion poll that contradicts former President Donald Trump’s assertion regarding the popularity of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Musk’s comments came as he supported Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy, claiming that X’s "community notes" tool was being manipulated by governmental and media entities.

On Thursday, Musk shared an unverified claim from a right-wing account on X, questioning the credibility of a Ukrainian polling organization due to its association with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). He suggested that if Zelenskyy were genuinely popular, he would hold elections, arguing that the Ukrainian leader’s decision to cancel elections after imposing martial law was indicative of his unpopularity. Musk went further by alleging that U.S. intelligence agencies estimated Zelenskyy’s approval rating to be as low as 4 percent.

In a challenge to Zelenskyy, Musk stated, “I challenge Zelensky to hold an election and refute this. He will not.” His remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the Ukrainian leader and Trump, who recently labeled Zelenskyy a “dictator” for rejecting claims that Ukraine was responsible for the war and for expressing concerns about being excluded from negotiations with Russia.

Musk’s assertions have raised eyebrows, particularly as he did not provide evidence to back his claims about the supposed manipulation of X’s community notes system, which is designed to attach clarifying notes to contentious posts based on user consensus. Experts have voiced concern over Musk’s rhetoric, with Lucas Graves, a journalism professor, warning that such accusations may lead to a scenario where platforms like X could be skewed to serve the political interests of their owners.

John Wihbey, an associate professor of media innovation, noted that while community notes can be an effective tool for combating misinformation, their effectiveness relies on transparent rules that prevent manipulation. He emphasized that the owner of a platform may not always agree with the findings of such systems.

Polling data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology indicated that 57 percent of respondents trusted Zelenskyy, a figure that reflects a decline in his popularity since the outset of the war, where approval ratings were as high as 90 percent in March 2022. Critics of Musk’s management of X have pointed out that under his leadership, the platform has faced significant criticism for allowing misinformation to proliferate, particularly regarding the upcoming 2024 U.S. elections.

Gordon Pennycook, a psychology professor at Cornell University, expressed concern that X may become a tool for propaganda favoring Musk and Trump, suggesting that Musk’s desire to reform community notes stems from a reluctance to accept correction, a behavior often associated with authoritarian figures. As the situation develops, the implications of Musk’s actions on public discourse and misinformation remain a focal point of concern among analysts and media experts.
