US man who shot Israeli tourists believed they were Palestinians, according to police

A 27-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident that injured two Israeli visitors in Miami Beach, Florida. The suspect, Mordechai Brafman, reportedly believed the victims were Palestinians and allegedly expressed this belief during his arrest.

The shooting occurred on Saturday night when Brafman, driving his truck, opened fire on the two men, identified in local reports as a Jewish father and son visiting from Israel. Both victims survived the attack, although one sustained a shoulder injury and the other was wounded in his forearm. The incident has raised concerns amid ongoing tensions related to the conflict in Gaza, which has seen a rise in hate crimes against various communities.

In an interview, one of the victims, Ari Revay, described the harrowing experience, stating that the shooter fired at them from a passing vehicle, saying, “Boom, boom, boom,” as he opened fire. Revay recounted how Brafman rolled down his window and began shooting at random.

Brafman was taken into custody and charged with two counts of attempted murder. According to the police report, he spontaneously remarked that he had seen “two Palestinians” and intended to shoot them. This statement has sparked outrage and concern, particularly as advocacy groups highlight a surge in anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic incidents since the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023.

The shooting is part of a troubling trend, with advocacy organizations noting an increase in violent acts against Palestinian Americans and other communities. Just days prior, a six-year-old Palestinian boy was tragically killed in a hate crime in Chicago, and other violent incidents targeting Palestinians have been reported across the country.

Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, condemned the shooting as part of a broader pattern of hate. He urged policymakers to address the anti-Palestinian sentiment that has contributed to violence both domestically and abroad.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on alert, grappling with the implications of this violence and the urgent need for dialogue and understanding in a time of heightened tensions.
