An airplane caught fire during an air show in Laredo, Texas, on Sunday, resulting in one person sustaining injuries. The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. at Laredo International Airport, where the aircraft was taking part in the WBCA Stars & Stripes Air Show Spectacular.
According to reports, the aircraft experienced mechanical issues while airborne, leading to the engine catching fire. The pilot, a man in his 70s, managed to land the plane safely despite the emergency. Once on the ground, the fire was extinguished, but the pilot suffered facial and head injuries. He was initially taken to Laredo Medical Center in critical condition and later transferred to a facility in San Antonio for further observation.
Hernan Martinez, a spokesperson for the Laredo Fire Department, confirmed that all necessary units were on standby to ensure the safety of the pilot during the incident. The fire prompted local authorities to close off Jacaman Road and Barlett Avenue near the airport, but the air show resumed shortly after, and the roads were reopened.
No other individuals were aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is leading the investigation into the fire, with assistance from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This incident comes just a day after a tragic plane crash in Georgia claimed the lives of at least two people shortly after takeoff.
The air show, which continues to attract crowds, serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in aviation, even in controlled environments like air shows. As investigations proceed, the aviation community will be keenly observing the findings to enhance safety measures for future events.
