Mourners attending funerals at Los Angeles County cemeteries became victims of theft in a disturbing crime spree perpetrated by David Bassett, a 44-year-old resident of Rancho Cucamonga. Over the course of a year, from February 5, 2023, to February 25, 2024, Bassett targeted vehicles parked at two Forest Lawn cemeteries and the Oakwood Memorial Park and Cemetery, stealing personal belongings and credit cards from grieving families.
According to the district attorney’s office, Bassett not only broke into the cars but also made unauthorized charges on the stolen credit cards, adding to the heartache of those already mourning their loved ones. His actions were described as "despicable" by District Attorney Hochman, who emphasized the vulnerability of individuals attending funerals and paying their respects.
Bassett recently submitted a plea of no contest to the charges against him and has been sentenced to four years in state prison. A restitution hearing is scheduled for March 28, where the court will determine how much he must pay to the victims of his crimes.
This case highlights a troubling trend of thefts occurring in places where people expect to find solace. The district attorney’s office has issued a warning to potential offenders: exploiting the grief of others will lead to prosecution and consequences. As families gather to honor their deceased loved ones, the community remains vigilant against those who prey on their sorrow.
