A Texas man has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for kidnapping a 13-year-old girl, a case that highlights the grave dangers of child abduction and the importance of vigilant community intervention. Steven Robert Sablan, 63, was convicted after he kidnapped the girl in San Antonio, drove her across state lines to California, and subjected her to threats with a firearm as well as sexual assault during the journey.
The incident occurred on July 9, 2023, when the girl was rescued outside a laundromat located on East 10th Street in Long Beach. While sitting in a silver Nissan Sentra, she managed to scrawl a desperate plea for help on a piece of paper, writing “Help Me!” in red ink. A passerby noticed the alarming message and promptly alerted the police. Upon their arrival, the girl was seen mouthing the word "help," prompting officers to intervene and remove her from the vehicle.
Sablan, who has been in federal custody since the incident, pleaded guilty to the charges in January 2024. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been ordered to pay restitution amounting to $1,158. Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally emphasized the significance of the lengthy sentence, stating that it ensures Sablan will not have the opportunity to harm children again. He commended the collaborative efforts of federal and local law enforcement in securing justice for the victim.
The girl had informed Sablan of her age during the abduction, which he carried out under the threat of a firearm. Prosecutors highlighted the psychological trauma inflicted on the victim, exacerbated by the fear and anguish experienced by her family during her absence. The case serves as a chilling reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young individuals and the critical role that community vigilance plays in ensuring their safety.
In light of this incident, law enforcement agencies continue to advocate for public awareness and education regarding child safety, urging individuals to remain alert and proactive in recognizing signs of distress. The successful rescue of the girl underscores the impact that a single act of awareness can have in preventing further victimization.
