Immigration Raid Fears Lead to Cancellation of Multiple July Celebrations in Los Angeles

Several communities in Los Angeles County are canceling or postponing their Independence Day celebrations due to safety concerns related to ongoing immigration enforcement actions. The El Sereno Bicentennial Committee was among the first to announce the cancellation of its 66th Independence Day Parade, which was set to take place this year. They made this announcement in a Facebook post on June 20, emphasizing their commitment to the safety of participants, spectators, and volunteers.

Traditionally, the parade features many local organizations, schools, and entertainment groups, with over 1,200 people expected to march. However, a number of groups withdrew their participation this year, prompting the committee to cancel the event.

The decision comes amid reports of immigration raids across Los Angeles, particularly in places like Home Depot parking lots and food vendor locations. These actions have created a climate of fear among residents. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her concern, highlighting the anxiety families feel about going out, fearing that they might not return home due to the risk of being detained.

Other events have also been affected. Fourth of July festivities in Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, and Northeast Los Angeles, organized by City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, have been postponed. The city of Cudahy has also delayed its Independence Day celebration, originally scheduled for July 3, without providing a new date. Additionally, Bell Gardens has canceled two movie events that were part of its Summer Nights series.

The ongoing immigration enforcement actions have not only disrupted community events but have also impacted daily life for many residents. The fear of raids has made families hesitant to engage in normal activities, such as dining out or attending public gatherings. As these communities navigate this challenging situation, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
