Stockton Man Arrested in Undercover Sting After Pledging Support for ISIS, Prosecutors Report

A 33-year-old man from Stockton, California, has been charged with attempting to support the Islamic State, also known as ISIS. Ammaad Akhtar was arrested after he mistakenly believed he was communicating with an ISIS member. Instead, he was in contact with an undercover federal agent.

The investigation began in February 2025 when Akhtar reached out to the agent, expressing his support for the terrorist group. During their conversations, he mentioned wanting to travel abroad to join ISIS and fight. Prosecutors say he even sent money to the agent, believing it would help fund ISIS activities. When the agent claimed the money was used to buy weapons, Akhtar reportedly responded with a chilling message: “may Allah destroy our enemies.”

As the investigation continued, Akhtar discussed plans for an attack and requested information on how to create an explosive device to cause chaos at a public event. This alarming behavior culminated in a meeting with the undercover agent, where he provided items including clothing, binoculars, $400 in cash, two loaded guns, and six magazines. He also pledged loyalty to ISIS during this encounter.

Following his arrest, Akhtar was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic terrorism and the recruitment tactics of extremist groups. Authorities are vigilant in monitoring individuals who express support for such organizations, especially as they seek to prevent potential attacks on American soil.
