Fire engulfs hot air balloon in Brazil, resulting in 8 fatalities and 13 injuries

A tragic accident occurred on Saturday in Brazil’s southern state of Santa Catarina when a hot air balloon caught fire and fell from the sky, resulting in the deaths of eight people. Firefighters confirmed the fatalities, which have left the community in mourning.

The incident took place in Praia Grande, where local news outlet G1 shared footage showing the balloon engulfed in flames as it descended rapidly. Eyewitnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the balloon before it crashed. Disturbingly, videos circulating on social media depicted two individuals falling from the balloon as the fire spread.

According to Ulisses Gabriel, the chief of Santa Catarina’s civil police, three victims were found embracing each other in their final moments. He expressed the deep sorrow this tragedy has caused, stating, “It hurts the soul.”

Among the 21 people on board, including the pilot, 13 managed to survive and were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The pilot, who is one of the survivors, recounted that the fire began in the balloon’s basket. He attempted to lower the balloon and instructed passengers to jump out as they neared the ground. Unfortunately, some passengers were unable to exit before the balloon crashed.

Governor Jorginho Mello addressed the incident, expressing his condolences and stating that the state would do everything possible to assist the survivors and comfort the families affected. He emphasized the need for investigations to determine the cause of the fire and the subsequent crash.

The hot air balloon ride was part of a popular activity in the region, especially during June festivities that celebrate Catholic saints, including St. John. The flight was expected to last around 45 minutes and reach an altitude of 1,000 meters, costing approximately 550 reais (about C$137) per passenger.

This incident is not isolated. Just a week prior, another hot air balloon accident in São Paulo state resulted in the death of a 27-year-old woman and injuries to 11 others. The recent events have raised concerns about the safety of hot air ballooning in Brazil, a popular pastime during festive seasons.
