A British superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily last year has been successfully raised from the seabed by a specialized salvage team. The vessel, named Bayesian, went down during unexpected severe weather in August, leading to a tragic loss of life. Of the 22 people on board, seven perished, including the owner, British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and his 18-year-old daughter.
The incident raised questions among naval experts, who believe that the yacht should have been able to handle the storm better and shouldn’t have sunk as quickly as it did. The recovery operation faced challenges, including the death of a diver earlier this year during preliminary salvage efforts. This diver was a Dutch national working with the salvage company.
The recovery of the Bayesian marks a significant step in addressing the aftermath of this unfortunate event, which has drawn attention not only for its tragic loss but also for the implications it has for maritime safety and yacht design.
