Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday morning as the G7 Leaders’ Summit kicks off in Alberta. Carney arrived in Calgary on Sunday, where he was welcomed by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
Before heading to Calgary, Carney had a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Ottawa. They signed new agreements on economic and defense cooperation, highlighting Canada’s efforts to strengthen international ties.
The one-on-one meeting with Trump is scheduled for 9 a.m. local time. This meeting comes as both countries are trying to finalize a new trade and security agreement, but no deal has been reached yet. Carney and Trump have been in discussions for weeks, and many are eager to see if they can make progress.
Dominic LeBlanc, Canada’s trade minister, expressed concerns about the slow pace of negotiations regarding Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods. He warned that if a deal isn’t reached soon, Canada may consider retaliatory measures against the increased tariffs on steel and aluminum.
The G7 summit will focus on pressing global issues, including the economy and conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Protesters gathered in downtown Calgary on Sunday as leaders arrived, showcasing the public’s engagement with the summit.
Trump arrived late on Sunday after hosting a military parade in Washington, D.C. He hinted at the possibility of new trade deals at the G7 but did not specify any countries, including Canada.
Carney’s meetings at the summit will also include discussions with leaders from Australia, South Africa, and other nations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to attend as well, particularly to discuss the ongoing war with Russia.
In his role as host, Carney aims to address key issues such as peace and security, wildfire responses, and the use of artificial intelligence to boost economic growth. The G7 includes the U.S., France, Germany, Japan, the U.K., Italy, Canada, and the European Union.
