Ontario Dentist Identified as Canadian Victim of Air India Crash

A tragic plane crash in India has left many grieving, including the family of a dentist from Mississauga, Ontario. Dr. Nirali Patel was among the 240 people who lost their lives when the Air India flight went down shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on Thursday.

Dr. Patel was traveling to India for social visits with friends and family, with plans to return to Canada soon. She worked as a registered dentist in Mississauga and lived in Etobicoke with her husband, who is also in the dental field, and their young child. A family friend, Don Patel, expressed the shock and devastation felt by her family. He mentioned that they flew to India immediately after hearing the news of the crash.

Nirali graduated from dental school in India before moving to Canada, where she became known for her dedication to her work and community service. She volunteered annually at a free dental camp, believing in making a difference in people’s lives.

The crash occurred just five minutes after takeoff, claiming the lives of 169 Indians, 53 Britons, and seven Portuguese nationals, alongside Dr. Patel, the lone Canadian on board. Only one person survived the disaster, which was marked by a fiery explosion, as captured in videos from the scene.

The news of the crash spread quickly, prompting condolences from Canadian officials. Premier Doug Ford expressed his sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to all affected families. Prime Minister Mark Carney also shared his shock and sadness, stating that Canadian transportation officials were in close contact with their Indian counterparts. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as "heartbreaking beyond words" and offered his thoughts to those impacted.

As the investigation into the crash begins, Dr. Patel’s family is asking for privacy during this difficult time, while they come to terms with their loss and the outpouring of support from the community.
