Ongoing Protests Against ICE in LA: What You Need to Know

Protests against immigration raids in California have sparked a significant response from the Trump administration, leading to the deployment of Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles. This situation has escalated tensions between local officials and federal authorities as demonstrations continue.

The protests began over the weekend and have mostly remained peaceful. However, some violence has been reported. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested 50 people from Saturday to Monday morning. Police Chief Jim McDonnell emphasized the department’s support for peaceful assembly but warned that anyone engaging in violence or vandalism would face arrest.

During the protests, some demonstrators built barricades and threw objects at officers. In response, police deployed tear gas and non-lethal munitions to disperse the crowds. Five officers sustained minor injuries, and the LAPD is currently investigating the use of force during these incidents.

Among those arrested was David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union California, who was released shortly afterward. Charges against protesters range from attempted murder to looting.

In a controversial move, President Trump ordered 700 Marines to Los Angeles, claiming that the protests constitute a rebellion against federal authority. He also federalized 2,000 National Guard troops for 60 days. However, Chief McDonnell stated he had not been informed about the Marines’ deployment and expressed confidence in the LAPD’s ability to manage the situation without federal intervention.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is suing the Trump administration over the deployment, arguing it violates the state’s control over its National Guard. Newsom criticized the federal response as unnecessary and disrespectful to the troops involved. He claimed that the troops are not being adequately supported and are waiting for orders in federal buildings.

The White House defended the president’s actions, suggesting that local leaders should appreciate the federal support. The ongoing conflict highlights the deep divisions between state and federal authorities over immigration policies and public safety.
