Social media users in California are being warned about a scam that offers vehicle registration renewals at a 50% discount. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issued this alert after receiving reports of fake advertisements circulating online. These ads falsely claim to provide discounted services, which are not authorized by the DMV.
The DMV clarified that state law prohibits them from offering any discounts on vehicle registration renewals. The ads are designed to trick people into providing personal information, such as their full name, license plate number, and the last five digits of their vehicle registration. To complete the supposed transaction, users are asked to make payments through Cash App, a peer-to-peer payment service.
DMV officials stress that they will never request personal information or payment through unofficial channels like social media. They recommend that residents only renew their vehicle registrations through the official DMV website, at DMV kiosks, or by making appointments at DMV offices.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, the DMV advises people to steer clear of any offers for discounted services. They should not engage with unsolicited messages asking for personal or financial information. If there is any doubt about the legitimacy of a post or advertisement, individuals can confirm its authenticity by contacting the DMV directly at (800) 777-0133.
DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized that the safest way to handle vehicle registration renewals is through the official DMV website, ensuring that residents protect their personal information and finances from scammers.
