Kananaskis Golf Course Prepares for G7 Summit and Potential Trump Appearance

Darren Robinson has some exciting news for world leaders: the Kananaskis Country Golf Club is ready to welcome them. Robinson, the general manager of the club located in Alberta’s stunning Rocky Mountains, is preparing to host the G7 leaders’ summit from June 15 to 17.

This isn’t Robinson’s first encounter with global leaders. Back in 2002, during the G8 summit, he had a memorable moment with then-U.S. President George Bush and Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar. Robinson approached them to share that the pro shop was open, and they ended up chatting about golf and running, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair joining in. Robinson recalled feeling as if time stood still during that brief exchange.

Fast forward to today, and Robinson is gearing up for another summit, this time with the G7. The golf club is within a secure area that will be closed to the public for the event. The Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge will serve as the main venue, just a short drive from the golf course.

There’s speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump, known for his love of golf, might take a swing on the scenic course. He even received Kananaskis merchandise during a previous visit to the White House from Prime Minister Mark Carney. However, it’s unclear if he will play during the summit.

Robinson remembers past interactions with leaders fondly. He shared a story about former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, who, when told there wasn’t time to play, took off his tie and jacket and hit a few shots on the course. Chrétien humorously quipped about his golf style, comparing it to former President Bill Clinton.

As the summit approaches, Robinson hopes for memorable moments again, though he’s not expecting a repeat of the past. He’s ready to assist and eager to see what unfolds during this high-profile event.
