A man from Washington state has been charged with terrorism in connection with a deadly bombing at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. The incident occurred on May 17, when Guy Edward Bartkus, 25, detonated a bomb at the American Reproductive Centers, killing himself and injuring four others.
Federal authorities announced the charges against Daniel Park, 32, who allegedly helped Bartkus obtain a significant amount of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in explosives. Park is accused of providing 270 pounds of this material, which is a key ingredient for homemade bombs.
After the bombing, Park fled to Europe but was detained by Polish law enforcement. He was later deported back to the United States and arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Reports indicate that he attempted to harm himself when confronted by Polish authorities.
During the investigation, officials discovered that Park had shipped approximately 180 pounds of ammonium nitrate earlier in the year and had arranged for an additional 90 pounds to be sent to Bartkus shortly before the attack. The FBI found evidence that the two men had conducted experiments with explosive materials in Bartkus’ garage.
Authorities described the bombing as one of the most powerful seen in Southern California, with the explosion creating a debris field that extended 250 yards. The FBI noted that Bartkus had a history of expressing extremist views online, including a belief that procreation is unethical in a world facing overpopulation and environmental issues.
The investigation revealed that Park and Bartkus had a shared ideology, with Park reportedly trying to recruit others who shared similar beliefs. Following the bombing, the FBI recovered explosive materials from Bartkus’ home, as well as evidence of their online activities related to their violent plans.
