10-Year-Old Accidentally Shoots Mother While Using VR Headset

A tragic incident in Milwaukee has led to a 10-year-old boy being charged with first-degree homicide for the shooting death of his mother, Quiana Mann, who was 44 years old. The shooting occurred on the morning of November 21, around 7 a.m., near 87th and Hemlock. Initial reports suggested that the boy was playing with a gun when it accidentally discharged, striking his mother in the head.

According to the criminal complaint, the boy expressed anger towards his mother for waking him up early and for not allowing him to purchase an item on Amazon. In his first interview with police, he claimed that he was simply twirling the gun when it went off. After the shooting, he woke his sister, who discovered their mother’s lifeless body and called 911.

The complaint reveals troubling details about the boy’s behavior and mental health. His 26-year-old sister informed detectives that he has exhibited "rage issues" throughout his life and has imaginary friends who converse with him. A therapist had previously given him a concerning diagnosis, prompting their mother to install cameras in the home for monitoring, though these cameras had been unplugged shortly before the incident.

The day after the shooting, the boy reportedly logged into his mother’s Amazon account and ordered an Oculus Virtual Reality Headset. Witnesses, including family members, noted that he did not display any signs of remorse following the tragedy. An aunt reported that he acknowledged aiming the gun at his mother and only expressed regret after asking if his Amazon package had arrived.

In a subsequent interview, the boy admitted to retrieving the gun due to his anger and claimed he intended to scare his mother by shooting at the wall. He also confessed to obtaining his mother’s keys to the gun lock box the night before the incident.

The Milwaukee community has been left in shock by the event, with neighbors describing the area as typically quiet. Local authorities, including Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, expressed concern over the crime, regardless of the age of the perpetrator.

The boy is facing serious charges, with a maximum penalty of 60 years in prison if convicted. He appeared in court on Friday, where a cash bond of $50,000 was set. His next court status hearing is scheduled for December 7. In Wisconsin, it is unusual for someone under 17 to be charged as an adult, making this case particularly notable and alarming.
