The Milwaukee Dancing Grannies are set to make a heartfelt return to the Waukesha Christmas Parade this Sunday, marking a poignant occasion to honor the four members they tragically lost during last year’s event. The group aims to pay tribute to their "fallen four" while also expressing gratitude to the community that has supported them through their mourning.
The parade, which will take place in Waukesha, Wisconsin, is significant for the Grannies as it commemorates the devastating incident in November 2021, when a driver plowed through the parade route, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to nearly 70 others. This year, the Grannies will carry poster-sized images of their lost friends, ensuring their memories are central to the event.
Jean Knutson, co-leader of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, shared her feelings about participating in the parade again. "Knowing that our fallen four are not here with us, but then also going back to Waukesha knowing that that’s where their last steps were," she reflected, highlighting the emotional weight of the occasion. The Grannies will also distribute gift bags containing "Granny Strong" and "Waukesha Strong" bracelets as a gesture of appreciation for the support they have received from the community.
Knutson emphasized the importance of community support in their healing process, stating, "It’s the love and support of the communities that are empowering us to continue to move forward." The Grannies, who share a bond forged through shared grief, are focused on creating new memories while honoring the past.
The Waukesha Christmas Parade is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM, and attendees can expect to see the Grannies in their iconic blue and white costumes. Although there was initial consideration to change their attire, the decision was made to retain the traditional outfits as a tribute to the members they lost.
As the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies prepare for this emotional return, they embody resilience and the spirit of remembrance, reminding everyone of the strength found in community and shared experiences.
