Klobuchar: Court Rules Trump Isnt King; Congress Holds Authority on Tariffs

Senator Amy Klobuchar spoke out on MSNBC’s “The Last Word” about a recent federal court ruling that blocked former President Donald Trump’s tariffs. She emphasized that this decision is a clear reminder that the president does not have unlimited power.

During the interview with host Lawrence O’Donnell, Klobuchar highlighted the significance of this ruling for Minnesota, especially since Canada is the state’s largest trading partner. With the tariffs no longer in effect, she noted that a new chapter in U.S.-Canada trade discussions can begin.

Klobuchar pointed out that the court’s decision involved three judges, two of whom were appointed by Republican presidents. She found it noteworthy that they unanimously agreed to strike down the tariffs, reinforcing the idea that Congress, not the president, holds the authority over trade laws.

She argued that Trump was using a law that didn’t explicitly mention tariffs to justify his actions. Klobuchar referenced historical events, like the Boston Tea Party, to illustrate the importance of congressional power in setting tariffs. She reminded viewers that the U.S. fought for independence to avoid having a king impose such taxes.

In her view, the Constitution clearly states that Congress has the power to impose taxes and duties. This ruling is seen as a step toward upholding that principle and ensuring that trade decisions reflect the will of the legislature rather than the whims of a single individual.
