Eylon Levy, a former spokesperson for the Israeli government, described this predicament as an "impossible bind." He emphasized that Israel must defeat Hamas to prevent future conflicts, but also needs to ensure the safe return of hostages taken during the recent violence.
In an interview, Levy stated that if Hamas remains in power after the conflict, it will only lead to more violence in the future. He expressed that Israelis do not want ongoing war; they desire a resolution that includes the total defeat of Hamas. Levy pointed out that the current conflict, which has lasted for over a year and a half, has placed immense pressure on Israel, particularly with the hostages still in Gaza.
The international community has criticized Israel’s military actions, with countries like the U.K., France, and Canada calling for a halt to operations in Gaza. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused these leaders of misunderstanding the situation. Levy added that anyone criticizing Israel should propose a better solution for removing Hamas from power, as simply opposing Israel could inadvertently strengthen the group.
Levy also highlighted the difficulties surrounding hostage negotiations. He noted that Hamas is demanding the release of individuals who could become future hostage-takers in exchange for the current hostages. This creates a moral and strategic dilemma for Israel, which is under pressure to secure the hostages’ safety without enabling further violence.
While some nations have shifted their support away from Israel, the U.S. has shown a different stance since Donald Trump returned to the presidency. Levy remarked that the Trump administration appears more supportive of Israel’s military strategies, contrasting with the previous administration’s approach.
Despite the complexities of the situation, Levy believes that Israel must find a way to resolve these conflicting goals. He acknowledged that while paying ransoms for hostages is risky and could encourage future kidnappings, the urgent need to save lives complicates the decision-making process. The ongoing conflict has left Israel in a precarious position, balancing military objectives with humanitarian concerns.
