A flight from Tokyo to Texas had to make an emergency landing in Seattle after a passenger tried to open the plane’s doors mid-flight. All Nippon Airways (ANA) Flight 114 was diverted about nine hours into its journey on Saturday due to this incident involving an unruly passenger.
The aircraft landed safely at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport around 4:19 a.m. local time, where local police and the FBI were waiting. Authorities reported that a male passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, was experiencing a medical crisis. He was restrained by the flight crew and other passengers after his attempt to open the doors.
After landing, the man was taken to a hospital for treatment. It is still unclear whether he will face any criminal charges. The airline emphasized that the safety of its passengers and crew is its top priority and expressed gratitude to the local law enforcement for their quick response.
While on the tarmac, another passenger was also removed from the flight for acting out. This individual reportedly became upset about the diversion and punched a bathroom door. No charges have been filed against this second passenger, according to the FBI.
The flight eventually reached its intended destination, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas, at approximately 12:40 p.m. local time, about four hours later than scheduled.
This incident is not the first time there has been trouble on this particular route. In 2024, another ANA flight from Tokyo to Seattle had a passenger who was heavily intoxicated and bit a flight attendant. Such unruly behavior has been seen on other airlines as well, with similar incidents occurring in recent months.
Air travel can be unpredictable, and this event highlights the challenges that airlines face in ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers.
