Fontana Man Shot Dead by Police After Answering Door Following 911 Call, Authorities Claim He Was Armed

Fontana police shot and killed a man early Sunday morning after he allegedly pointed a gun at officers responding to a 911 call about domestic violence. The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. in an apartment located in the 9100 block of Date Street.

The man, identified as 31-year-old Kevin Reyes Portillo, was shot when he opened the door to the officers. According to police, he brandished a firearm, prompting the officers to open fire. After being shot, Portillo was treated at the scene before being rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.

Fontana Police Officer Steve Reed did not provide details on how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired during the encounter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the shooting but has not commented further on the case.

This incident comes amid scrutiny of the Fontana Police Department, which has faced criticism from the state Department of Justice over previous police shootings, including the death of Jaime Valdez in 2023. That investigation is still ongoing.

In a separate case last year, the department settled a lawsuit for nearly $1 million with a man who claimed he was coerced into confessing to a murder that never happened during a lengthy interrogation. The recent shooting has raised concerns and questions about police conduct and accountability in the community.
