Yosemite National Park’s eastern entrance is set to reopen just in time for Memorial Day weekend, bringing relief to visitors eager to explore the park. Officials announced that Tioga Road, a scenic stretch of Highway 120, will open to all traffic at 8 a.m. on Monday. The road has been closed since November due to ice and snow, a seasonal closure that typically lasts until late May or early June.
The reopening of Tioga Road is a significant event for the park. This year, it comes about two weeks earlier than last year and a month earlier than the previous year. The road closure spans 45 miles, from the Tuolumne Grove east of Crane Flat to the Tioga Pass Entrance Station.
Preparing the road for reopening is no small task. Crews have been working hard to clear snow, plow through areas prone to avalanches, and remove fallen trees and rockfalls. They also need to prepare campgrounds and essential facilities for visitors.
Despite the excitement, there are some changes this year. The park service has decided not to offer early access to Tioga Road for cyclists, a move that has disappointed some biking enthusiasts. Many feel that designated cyclist-only days should continue to be a tradition.
As the park gears up for the busy holiday weekend, officials are reminding visitors to plan ahead. Those entering Yosemite between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. will need a reservation and should expect longer wait times. Reservations will also be required during peak times, including from June 15 to August 15 and during Labor Day weekend.
Visitors should be aware that services along Tioga Road may be limited. It is advisable to bring enough food and water, and to use food lockers if stepping away from vehicles.
Yosemite may face staffing shortages this summer due to recent cuts at the National Park Service. With the park already operating at a 30% staffing deficit, officials encourage visitors to be patient and courteous to the staff who are working hard to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Yosemite’s acting superintendent, Ray McPadden, expressed excitement about welcoming visitors back for the holiday weekend. He acknowledged the hard work of the park team in preparing for the season and wished everyone a safe and enjoyable visit.
