North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed strong disapproval following the failed launch of a new naval destroyer, which crashed during its public unveiling. The incident took place on Wednesday in Chongjin, a northeastern port city, while Kim was present to witness the event.
According to state media reports, Kim condemned the mishap as an “intolerable criminal act.” He attributed the failure of the 5,000-ton destroyer to “carelessness,” stating that it tarnished the national dignity of North Korea. Kim emphasized the need for immediate restoration of the ship before a ruling party meeting scheduled for June.
The launch, described as a side launch, was deemed risky due to the ship’s size and the technical challenges faced by North Korea. Analysts noted that the method might have been chosen because the shipyard lacked sufficient space for a safer launch. Witnesses reported that the vessel rolled onto its side, leaving most of its hull submerged.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the accident was caused by a loss of balance during the launch. While the exact extent of the damage remains unclear, satellite images indicated that parts of the ship were crushed. There were no immediate reports of any casualties from the incident.
Kim’s harsh critique reflects the pressure he faces to demonstrate military strength and technological advancement amid ongoing international scrutiny. The 5,000-ton destroyer represents North Korea’s largest warship to date and is intended to enhance the country’s naval capabilities, including the ability to launch missiles.
This incident is not the first of its kind for North Korea, which has experienced previous failures, including a satellite launch and a building collapse. Kim’s remarks highlight the significance of this event not just as a technical failure but as a political challenge to his authority and the reputation of the state.
